Introduction: - Plasma Ion Nitriding (PIN) is an established and well proven method of increasing surface hardness and wear resistance of metals and alloys. Plasma Nitriding of materials involves the activation of nitrogen gas in a glow discharge ensuring better diffusion into the surface of the material. This leads to the formation of a mono phase nitride layer either epsilon or gamma prime. These layers give higher surface hardness and higher strength which leads to minimum wear & tear and longer life in dies, components etc.

PIN scores over the conventional nitriding process in the following areas-

  • · The equipment operates without pollution and with no undesirable environmental issues.
    · Lower processing temperature & hence virtually distortion free.
    · Mechanical treatments are not required for enhancing surface finish due to minimum distortion. 3 to 5 times shorter duration of treatment
    · Consumes less gas.
  • · A mono-phase, highly ductile gamma prime compound layer can be produced for high strength.
  • · A relatively thick epsilon compound zone can be obtained for abrasive or corrosive application conditions.
  • · These layers can be porosity free hence useful in anti-corrosive usage.
  • · The formation of a compound layer can be completely suppressed for work pieces subject to high dynamic stresses.
  • · It increases both mechanical and thermal fatigue strength values.
  • · It enhances the strain limit of all metallic materials.
  • · Die life, tool life is increased by 80-200% more.
  • · Faster treatment cycles with total control over the nitrided case (30 to 300 microns in a typical cycle).

· Major applications of Plasma Ion Nitriding (PIN) involves Hot forging dies , Pressure Die Casting dies, Glass Industry machinery parts, Construction & Mining Industry, Pumps manufacturing, aluminum/ copper extrusion industry and many others where wear resistance and elevated temperature property enhancement are required.

The above process can be applicable for Metallurgy ( Materials which can be Nitrided) :- All Steels from plain carbon steels upto heavily alloyed steels having alloyed elements like Cr, Mo, Al, B, Si, Ti, Ta, Co, Nb, Va, and Zr (which are nitride forming elements). Also cast irons of all types, superalloys based on Fe, Cr, Co, and Ni. Powder Metallurgy alloys can also be nitrided.
